Popular Birthday Games

Musical Chairs or Musical Flannels
This game has been around for many years and we have all played it or seen it played at some stage in our lives. However it is often not practical to have a group of children racing around your good furniture in a confined area. That is where musical flannels has proved a winner!!!
- Set up the flannels in a scattered motion over your room. You need to have one flannel less then the number of people playing the game
- Get the children to form a large circle around the flannels, maybe set up a specific course they have to follow. (They will get over excited and edge in otherwise
) - Play some childrens tunes and as the music plays the children can dance around the course you have laid
- Turn the music off
- When the music stops the children need to stand with both feet on the first available flannel they find. (Preferably no pushing and shoving
) - The child who is left not standing on a flannel is out of the game.
- Repeat this process until there is only one winner left.
TIP: As the number of children in the game becomes less, make sure you spread the flannels out as much as possible and set a large route for the children to dance, skip or walk around.
Musical Statues
It is time to pull out the old cd player and play some of your child's favourite music. A simple radio will work just as well.
- All the party goers can spread out around a room. Probably about a metre apart to protect them from any disorderly dancing arms and legs
- Start the music rolling
- The children can dance away to their hearts content to the music
- Without their knowledge (don't let them see you), you turn the music off suddenly
- All the children need to freeze immediately in whatever position they were in
- The last child to freeze (which is the slowest child to stop completely) is then out of the game
- You continue until you have one child remaining, who is your winner
Pass the Parcel

Pass the Parcel is a great way to get all your excited party goers to sit down and be relatively still for a small period of time.
Preparation
- You will need a small prize to offer for the winner. Anything you feel reasonable and within a cheap budget can be wrapped. For example, a toy car or little cosmetic set. You can pick up cheap but worthy prizes at all sorts of variety stores.
- Wrap this present in some birthday wrap, then start wrapping it in layers of newspaper
- You may choose to put a little lolly or healthy alternative in each layer of newspaper
- It is up to you how many layers you use
The Game
- All children can sit in a circle next to eachother
- Pull out the cd player or radio again - the person operating the music should not be facing the circle of children. Children can smell a rat a mile away

- The parcel can start with the birthday girl/boy and as the music plays they pass the parcel around the circle from one child to the next
- Suddenly the music can be turned off and whoever is left with parcel gets to remove a layer of newspaper
- This continues until there is only the birthday wrap yet. Whoever is left with the parcel wrapped in birthday paper wins the prize
TIP: Parents it is a good idea to remember how many layers of newspaper are around the prize. You can then cleverly orgastrate that most children get the opportunity to remove a layer before the major prize is received.
Pin the Tail on the Donkey

An old favourite. A Pin the Tail on the donkey game can be purchased cheaply at party stores or variety stores. Alternatively you and your child could make your own version using some creativity and maybe a picture of your childs face.
- You will need a simple blind fold for this game.
- Place the picture of the donkey on a suitable wall or pin up board.
- Get all the children to stand in a line opposite the picture of the donkey
- Place the blind fold around the child at the front and a donkeys tail in their hand
- Spin the child around a few times in a circle (not too much) and then point them in the direction of the donkey poster
- The child then pins the tail on the donkey where they think it goes
- Repeat this until all children have had a turn
- Whoever gets the tail closest to the donkies bottom wins
TIP: Write each childs name on a donkey tail before you start to avoid any confusion regarding the winner.
The Chocolate Game
An oldie but a goodie.
What you need
- A block of cadbury chocolate - it is up to you how much chocolate you offer for the game
- A knife and fork
- A pair of gloves
- A hat
- An old dress shirt or mens shirt for a boys party
- 2 dice
(Raid your wardroe for these items)
- Place the children in a circle around the block of chocolate and clothes
- The children take it in turns around the circle to roll the dice
- If they get a double number ie. double two they must get up and hop in the middle of the circle, put on the gloves, hat and shirt and only once they have done that they can get the knife and fork and start to cut themselves a piece of chocolate
- They continue cutting and eating as much chocolate as they can whilst the rest of the party goers keep throwing the dice. When someone else rolls a double they then take over from the person in the middle.
- This continues until there is no chocolate left

Lolly Treasure Hunt
It is traditional to give out a lolly bag or some form of thank-you at a birthday party. Again it is easy to take the distraction away from the lolly bag and more the fun of finding it.
To each lolly bag or alternative you have made, attach a square of fabric. You need to have enough different colours so that not every child has the same colour. Maybe three or four alternatives. Hide the lolly bags around a room or back yard.
At the end of the party, give each child a square of fabric, they then must go on a treasure hunt to find a lolly bag with the matching square of fabric. The focus is all on the hunt and not the end result. It is also a way to end your childs party on a happy and high note.
