Invitations
When it comes to invitations you can be as simple or creative as you like. Pre-made pirate invitations are available at most party shops and discount stores so if you prefer the simple option they shouldn't be too hard to find. For those amongst us who are more creative here is a few ideas:
- Treasure Map
Making a treasure map invitation ties in perfectly with the pirate theme. Make your treasure map look authentic by dragging a wet tea bag over the paper then if your really daring burn the edges. On your map include directions to your house letting X mark the exact spot where your house is located. Send your map in an evelope and use a skull and cross bone or jolly roger sticker to seal it. Alternatively if you are hand delivering your invites send them as a message in a bottle... - Message in a Bottle
If you have the option of hand delivering your invites you can send them as a message in a bottle. By rolling up your invites you can place them in miniature bottles such as recycled 40ml vodka, rum or bourbon bottles. These look great and tie in perfectly with the theme. Remember to make sure your bottles are well rinsed and dry before using them. - Scrapbooking
Use left over cardboard and paper to make pirate, treasure chest, pirate ship or parrot shaped invites. Keep them simple and remember to keep your child involved.
Costumes
Pirate costumes are great fun and easy to create. A combination of bandanas, beards, fake hooks, sashes, toy guns, daggers, gold earrings, a large gold belt buckle, eye patches and eyeliner scars make the perfect accesories. Combine this with a vest, boots and a tatty striped, spotted or checked shirt and you will have a pretty convincing pirate. Alternatively check out our pirate and captain hook costumes.
- How To Make a Paper/Felt Mustache
Making paper/felt mustaches is easy and can really add to your childs pirate costume. You will need black card/felt, scissors and double sided tape. Using black card/felt, fold it in half and draw half a mustache next to the fold. Cut around the half shape and open out the full mustache. Attach with bluetack or double sided tape. - How To Make An Eye Patch
To make an eye patch you will need black card/felt, white card/felt, scissors, glue and elastic. Fold the black card/felt in half and draw a half shield shape next to the fold. Cut out the half shape and open out the full eye patch. On white card/felt draw a skull and cross bone. Cut out your drawing and glue it onto the eyepatch. Measure the circumference of your childs head and cut a length of elastic to fit. Pierce a small hole on either side of the patch. Thread the elastic through the pierced holes and tie a knot. - How To Make a Cutless
Draw a dagger or cutless shape onto strong card. Cut out the outline and paint the handle black or gold. Once the paint is dry cover the knife part with silver alfoil. - How To Make a Hook
To make a pirates hook you will need silver card, a disposable plastic cup, sticky tape/glue and assorted coloured card. Use the silver card to draw and cut out a hook shape making sure to extend the length of the hook as part of it will be hidden by the cup. Cut the spare length of the hook in half long ways. Cut a slit into the bottom of the plastic cup and push the end of the hook through. Fold the two ends of hook (inside the cup) in opposite directions and fasten with sticky tape. Decorate the cup as you choose remembering to cover it all as it is meant to hide your childs hand. - How To Make a Pirate Hat
The most simple pirate hat is simply made using a scrap of material tied around your head as a bandana. For a more complex pirate hat follow these instructions:
1. Using separate pieces of card cut out two identical hat shapes
2. Use a long piece of scrap card to make a headband the same size as the circumference of your child's head.
3. Attach the two hat shapes together by gluing the head band to the front and back of the bottom of the hat shapes. To stop the top of the hats from flopping use another piece of scrap card to make a concertina which you can then attach to the front and back of the top of the hat shapes.
4. Decorate the front of the hat with a scull and cross bone.

Games & Activities
If there is one thing children love to do at parties its play games. Here is a few ideas to help keep them entertained:
- Pirate Names
On arrival give everyone a new pirate name by visiting the pirate name generator at http://gangstaname.com/pirate_name.php Allow time for each child to make up a name badge with their new pirate name. - Pinata's
Prior to the party make or purchase a pirate, treasure chest, fish, parrot or mermaid pinata. Using soft bats and a lot of supervision let each child have a turn at bashing away for gold and treasure. - Walk the Plank
Balance a fairly wide plank of wood on a couple of bricks or milk crates. Place the plank over a blue sheet and surround it with blow up crocodiles. Let each child walk the plank. Remember to closely supervise this activity so that the children don't fall and hurt themselves. - Treasure Hunt
Create a treasure hunt throughout a room, the house or garden by hiding chocolate gold coins and other pirate booty. Give each child a clue to help them find their treasure. Older kids can use written clues while younger kids may need photographic clues. - Musical Islands
Set up some islands using hula hoops, mats or cardboard in the middle of the room. While the music is playing the kids dance around the islands. Once the music stops they have to quickly jump onto an island. The child who misses out on an island is out of the game. Each round remove an island until there is only one island and two children left. The final child to jump on the last island wins the game. - Sink the Ship
Divide the guests into two teams and send them to separate sides of the room. Each team has two large buckets and a large pile of cannon balls (polystyrene balls painted black). When you give the signal each team has to try and throw as many of the cannon balls into the other teams buckets. Any balls that miss can be picked up and reused. The teams ship with the most cannon balls in their bucket at the end of the game sinks. - Filch the Flag
Each child is given a pirate flag which they tuck into the back of their pants. Make sure that most of the flag is sticking out of the pants. Within a given area they have to move around defending their own flag while trying to steal everyone elses. The child with the most flags at the end of the game wins. - Pirate Hook Quoits
To make pirate hook quoits you will need silver card, a disposable plastic cup, sticky tape/glue and a icecream container lid. Sticky tape the cup to the ice-cream container lid. Using cord rings let each child attempt to throw their ring onto the hook. The child who is most accurate wins. - Pirate Fashion Parade
End the party by letting the pirates strut their stuff and reward the most well dressed pirate.
