Teddy Bears' Picnic

"If you go down to the woods today, You're sure of a big suprise,
If you go down to the woods today, You'd better go in disguise.
For ev'ry bear that ever there was, Will gather there for certain because,
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic."

Having a teddy bears picnic makes a "beary" special party for little ones especially those sharing their 1st to 4th birthday with family and friends. What makes a teddy bears picnic so special is that all the guests are invited to bring along their favourite teddy bears to join in the fun and games. If there isn't a large number of young guests you may also encourage them to bring along their favourite storybook featuring a bear, to read at designated times throughout the party. Like the sounds of a teddy bears picnic but have no idea where to start? Here is a few idea to help you on your way.

Invitations

When it comes to invitations you can make them as simple or as creative as you like. Pre-made invitations featuring a teddy bear motif are available at most party or craft shops and some discount stores, so if you prefer the simple option they shouldn't be too hard to find. For those amongst us who are up for the more creative option here is a few ideas:

  • Scrapbooking
Use left over coloured card and paper to make invitations in the shape of a teddy bear. A bear shaped cookie cutter makes the perfect stencil for the basic teddy bear shape. Allow your child to colour in the teddy bear or decorate it with fake fur. Remember to leave room to write on the party details.
  • Picnic Basket
If you have the opportunity to hand deliver your invitations make miniature picnic basket invitations. Purchase a number of small baskets or make your own by cutting the top off small paper bags and sue the scraps to make a handle. Line the basket with red and white checked fabric or paper and roll up your invitation to put inside it
  • Photo Invitation
Take a photo of your child dressed as a teddy bear or surrounded by all her teddies. Print the image and use it on your invite or if using a digital camera create a special invitation using card making programs on your computer.

Costume

Depending on the age of your child and the activities you have planned they're a few options for costumes:

  • Ask your guests to dress in their picnic bests bringing along their favourite teddy bear and bear book.
  • Ask your guests to dress in their favourite pair of pajama's bringing along their favourite teddy bear and bear book.
  • Ask your guests to dress as teddy bears bringing along their favourite teddy bear and bear book.
  • Ask your guests to wear their picnic bests and provide them with a teddy bear ears headband, a bear tail and then paint their faces giving them a bear nose and whiskers. Also encourage them to bring along their favourite teddy bear and bear book.

Decorations

When decorating your house you can be as simple or as creative as you like. To help create a special teddy bears picnic here is a few ideas:

The book describes the woods as the place where the teddy bears have their picnic so creating this atmosphere is a good start. If you don't have a suitable park nearby, you need to hold the party inside due to weather conditions or you simply prefer to have the party at home you can make a forest using:

  • cardboard cutout trees.
  • Real and fake potted flowers also add to the scene by brightening it up.
  • Bears love honey which is made by bees so add a number of honey pots and make some bees to liven up your woods.
  • You can't have a teddy bears picnic without teddy bears so hide some teddies amongst the trees and use cardboard to create some bear foot and claw prints.
  • Every picnic needs a big picnic rug and picnic basket so be sure to set this up to help create the scene.

 Food Ideas

I can guarentee that if you buy a teddy bear cookie cutter it will be put to good use for this party theme. Here is some food ideas:

  • fairy bread in the shape of a teddy
  • teddy bear cookies
  • teddy bear shaped honey, vegemite, cheese and salad and ham and cheese sandwiches
  • tiny teddies (these may feature on the top of cup cakes)
  • cut up pieces of carrot, celery, apple and pear
  • cornflake honey crackles
    You will need:
     *90g butter or margerine
    *1/3 cup sugar
    *1 tablespoon honey
    *4 cups of cornflakes
    *20-24 patty pans

    Method:
Melt butter, sugar and honey in a saucepan until it is frothy. Mix through. Add the cornflakes and mix well. Spoon the mixture into patty cases aligned on baking tray. Bake in oven at 150°C for 10 minutes. Depending on the size of your patty pans the mixture should make at least 20 honey crackles.

To serve your picnic feast use cups and plates featuring a teddy bear motif!

Games and Activities

If there is one thing that children love to do at parties it's to play games. Here is a few ideas to keep them entertained:

  • Teddy Bear Name Tags
Use your teddy bear cookie cutter as a stencil to make name tags. One for the guest and one for their teddy. If your trying to fill in time while all the guests arrive let the kids decorate their name tags with pencils, textas and fake fur.
  • Bear Face Masks
Using paper plates make bear face masks.
  • Colouring in
Provide pencils, textas and scrap pieces of paper, card or material and let your guests draw a teddy bear or decorate and colour in a teddy bear picture.
  • Teddy Bear Cookies
If your holding the party at home you can help your guests make teddy bear shaped cookies.
  • Bear Hunt
There is a number of different ways you can do this.
    1. Create an obstacle course
    2. Provide your guests with clues to the whereabouts of the hidden bear. Leave prizes at different locations and provide your guests with small baskets to collect their goodies. Ask them to work together to find the one bear, this could be an adult dressed in a bear costume handing out prizes or perhaps the bear birthday cake.
    3. Take the bears off your guests and hide them all over a room. Your guests have to find their friends without giving clues to the other guests regarding the whereabouts of their teddies.
  • Sing-a-long
Teach your guests bear songs such as teddy bears picnic, teddy bear teddy bear, round and round the garden or going on a bear hunt.
  • Storytime
Read to your guests some of the story books that they brought along. Be sure to make your facial expressions and voice animated to add to the experience.
  • Musical Pass the Bear
To play this game you will need 1 teddy bear per child less one. Ask your guests to sit in a circle and hand out the teddy bears. When the music is playing they are to pass the teddy bears around the circle. When the music stops they are to stop passing the bears, holding the bear that they have up in the air. The child who doesn't have a bear is out of the game. Take one bear away and keep playing until there is 1 bear left and 2 guests. The guest who ends up with the bear wins the game.
  • Teddy Bear Pinata
Prior to the party make or purchase a teddy bear or picnic basket pinata. Using soft bats and a lot of supervision let each child have a turn at bashing away for teddy treats.
  • Photo Opportunity
Paint a large teddy bear on to carboard and cut out the face. Let each child put their face up to the hole and take a photo.
  • Musical Bears
Make or photocopy a number of 2D teddy bear heads (1 for each guest less 1). Set them up around the middle of the room. While the music is playing encourage the kids to dance around the teddy bears. Once the music stops they have to race to stand on one of the teddy bear heads. The child who misses out on a teddy bear is out of the game. Each round remove a head until there is only 1 island and 2 children left.  The final child to jump onto the final teddy bear head wins the game.
  • Bumble Bee Toss
Decorate plastic buckets so they look like bee hives. Purchase a number of yellow bean bags and paint black stripes on them so they look like bees. Line your guests up and see how many "bees" then can throw into the "hive". The guest or guests who are most accurate throwing the most "bees" into the "hive" win the game.
  • Pin the Heart on the Bear
This game works in the same way as Pin the Tail on the Donkey except you use a heart instead of a tail and a bear instead of a donkey. Simply cut out a number of heart shapes so there is one for each guest. Write the name of each guest on the back of the heart so there is no arguments about the winner. Pin up a poster of a teddy bear and draw a heart shape where the teddy bears heart belongs. Let your guests take turns being blindfolded, spun around and try to pin the heart in the correct spot. Once everyone has had a turn see who was the closest.
  • Which One is My Bear
As your guests arrive collect their teddy bears off them placing them into separate numbered paper bags (you may want to take note of whose teddy is in which bag so their is no confusion at the end of the game). Ask your guests to sit in a circle then pass the bags around allowing them to reach into each bag, without looking inside, and feel the teddy inside. The aim of the game is to feel the teddies inside the bag and guess which bag your teddy is in.
  • Teddy Bear Parade
Allow your guests to parade their teddy bears for the parents to see. This also works well if your guests have come dressed as teddy bears themselves.
  • For the Parents
Guess how many gummy bears are in the jar
