Stories and Their Importance

Stories help children develop in a number of ways. They can be either a story from a book or stories that are told by someone.

Stories can help children to:

1. Understand and manage a number of feelings and problems that they experience in their day.

  • A story that contains feelings helps your child understand their own feelings as well as how other people may feel.
  • Assists in teaching the different types of feelings that there are.
  • Books about different types of fears that children might have can help your child cope with their fears. By reading these stories to your child over and over again you can help them deal with their fear.

2. Assists in children learning to read and to enjoy reading.

  • Children learn that text carries meaning.
  • They learn that text is made up of letters and numerals and is broken up into words which make sentences.
  • They will discover that we read text from left to right and down the page. These are the early conventions of reading.

3. Helps develop language and thinking.

  • Books from an early age including picture books assist in increasing and developing your child’s vocabulary and word knowledge.
  • Stories help develop a child’s understanding of concepts including shapes, colours, size and numbers
  • Develops imagination skills
  • Helps children become independent learners.

4.Children learn that books are available to find out important and useful information.

5. Helps develop a child’s confidence

  • A child needs to have a sense of belonging in order for them to build their self-esteem and confidence. Stories from parents and grandparents about when they were little and about the family, help a child feel loved and have a sense of belonging.
  • And it is a great time to spend with your children to make them feel loved and cared about.
  • Stories can help a child feel happy and relaxed as they are about happy, fantasy worlds were everyone is happy and loved.

There is no greater start you can give your child on the road to reaching their potential, than to read to them every day, and develop their love of books.
