Educational Value of Play - Bubblemaking
Bubblemaking
Bubble blowing is a fantastic experience for stimulating children's language and developing their social skills. The 'magic' quality of bubbles transcends children's feelings of shyness and makes for very positive opportunities for children to interact.

Bubbles have always fascinated children - from young babies to young at heart grandparents like me! They are a very simple family activity that entertains children for hours.
Look at the colours in the bubbles. Talk about rainbows.
See if they can make different shapes by using different bubble blowers.
See who can make the biggest! The smallest! The most at one time!
Whose bubble lasts the longest or travels the furtherest.
See if they can catch a bubble. When they try to catch a bubble, does it make a difference where their hands are?
A simple bubble mixture can be made by adding washing up detergent to water, and a little bit of glycerine which makes the bubble last longer. Glycerine can be bought at supermarkets or pharmacies. Commercial bubble mixture is cheap, very good and available at most supermarkets.
To make simple bubble blowers, allow children to bend a pipe cleaner into a shape and push the ends into the hole at the end of a straw. The flexible nature of pipe cleaners means children can experiment with different shapes to see which ones make the best bubbles. Plastic coated wire can be used in the same way, and small plastic bottles with the end cut out make easy and effective bubble blowers also.
