Educational Value of Play - Woodwork
Woodwork
Woodwork allows children to express themselves. There are a large variety of materials available for children to use – softwood, plywood, hardwood, pegboard, clipboard. Logs or tree stumps are good to practice nail hammering.
Have available nails and woodglue, as well as a variety of materials for children to nail/glue onto their creations. Sandpaper wrapped around a wooden block is useful for children to use and eliminate splinters!
Physical
Manipulation of the wood and tools develops fine motor control. Hammering nails is wonderful for hand-eye coordination. Hammering tacks into cork is a good lead in to children using nails in wood.
Language/Social Development
Learning to use the tools develops children’s self esteem and encourages independence. It also allows them to ‘role play’ adult behaviour, developing ‘scripts’ for appropriate behaviour to be used in life.
Mathematical Concepts
Simple problem solving is a benefit of woodwork. It maybe as simple as finding a nail of appropriate length to join two pieces of wood, or putting together appropriate pieces/shapes of wood to make the desired construction. Manipulation of 3D shapes reinforces the attributes of them and how they fit together.
